| I haven't posted in two months, but that doesn't mean I've haven't been active. I didn't go to judo in December because of school and the holidays, but I did workout. The judo club was closed the last week of last month and the first week of this month for the holidays and simply for a much needed vacation for all the senseis, particularly the head sensei, so this week was the first of the new year. I attended class four times this week. I went during the second half of the youth classes for extra training. I'll probably continue doing this regularly from now on. Also, I've been promoted to green belt. I'm probably going to relegate this journal to achievements such as rank promotions, competition results, training breakthroughs, perhaps even relevant pictures or videos instead of regular assessments of training. | | |
| My throws are getting better. I think taking two months wasn't so bad, not that I really had a choice, there. In the future, maybe I'll take a month off if I feel like I'm getting frustrated.
My newaza was pretty lame though, because I was out of gas hard by the time we got around to that point.
I also learned some nice grip fighting techniques.
I kneed a guy in the head on accident trying to rolling into a pin from a tomoe nage. He flipped out a little bit. Crappy mistake on my part? Yeah, no doubt. Worth throwing a small tantrum over? I don't think so. I've been on the end of crappy mistakes or whatever, and I may have even felt some resentment, but I didn't show it.
| My German sensei at judo class was heading things tonight, which meant less workout and more drilling, which means I enjoyed class more.
We did lots of newaza drills starting from various different positions. I got caught with some weird tricep crusher submission twice because I wasn't expecting it all. Well, the second time I was, but only when it was too late. It's neat, but it's no fun to be on the receiving end. I also got caught with a straight armbar. Other than that, I didn't do too badly.
In tachiwaza, I got an ouchi gari on previously mentioned German sensei. I can't remember if I've actually thrown him before or not, but I'm guessing I haven't. He was impressed. I got a few other throws as well, but mostly I was getting thrown. I'm going to try to analyze and scrutinize less and just enjoy myself.
I got a speed rope. The rope's not quite as heavy as I'd like, but I'm sure it'll get the job done, and probably even last longer. I also got some wrestling shoes. They're super comfortable, look sweet, and they'll be my best pair of shoes for working out.
| I haven't posted in a while. While I haven't been completely inactive, nothing post-worthy.
I finally returned to judo. I did horrible, as I expected. I gassed pretty hard, also as I expected. However, I did better than I thought I would during newaza. I caught an armbar on one of the blackbelts. I don't think he gave it to me, but, and it's a big but, he's in his 60's and was gassed. Now, while I was gassed, I'm figuring it probably hits him a little harder at his age than it affects me. I'm still claiming it as a victory, though.
I really need to get another jump rope. There are other activities I could for high intensity cardio work, it's my favorite one.
I also made myself some cheap sports drink using this guide:
Forgot to mention this...here's a recipe from the roadbikerider.com (http://www.roadbikerider.com) web site: "You won't believe how close this sports drink recipe is to a commercial product. It has 110 mg of sodium and 38 mg of potassium per 8-oz. serving. Cost is only about 30 cents per half gallon. Compare that to $3 for Gatorade! You can adjust the sweetness to taste. -- John R. ► 1 packet any flavor of unsweetened Kool-Aid or similar product for making 2 quarts ► 8 tablespoons sugar ► 3/8 teaspoon of salt ► 1/8 teaspoon salt substitute that contains potassium chloride ► 2 quarts of water"
Works like a charm on the cheap.
| I did some running around my yard the other day. Who needs a track? I actually enjoy it more, it keeps my interest better than a flat, boring track. The only advantage of a track is easily keeping track of how much I ran. Although I enjoyed my run around the yard, I doubt I'll make it a regular thing. But maybe I'll go out and see if there are any decent trails close enough to attract me.
My jump rope also broke. It was cheap quality but it served me well while it lasted.
Today I worked on my handstand, and I think I made some progress by working on slowly raising into one instead of kicking up into one. It gives me more control, and I can hold intermediate positions. I did a couple single leg squats. Because they're not too intensive in small doses, I think I'll do one or two every day or so until I can do them easily, at which point I'll start doing sets of multiple reps. I'm also trying to find a way to work toward one arm pushups. I tried assuming the position I'd use for a one arm pushup, but used with both arms, and held the bottom position, shifting more tension to one side then the other. It felt like it might help, so I'll give it a shot and continue with it to see if it helps any. I also did some back and front neck bridges.
Topping it off, I did some grip work: CoC trainer 5x5 10 sec hold last rep, same scheme with extensor bands using the white band (smallest of five increments).
